Retractable Leashes
What are they and why don't we recommend them...
Retractable leashes are a thin line of cord able to be retracted in and out of a box with a handle on it. The purpose of them is to allow your dog more freedom and more space to explore while remaining on lead.
How safe are they and how can they affect your dog’s training?
1. A retractable leash usually has a very thin type of cord, and a lead like that is only as strong as it’s weakest link. They can break easily especially if you have a strong dog or get it caught around something.
2. They can malfunction/jam
3. The thin lead can cause human and dog injury if it gets wrapped around legs or hands.
4. They teach your dog to pull on the lead. As your dog pulls out the retractable leash they are allowed to get where they want to go while there is tension (even if it may be light) on the lead. So, dogs can learn that pulling works.
5. They are dangerous and inappropriate to use around roads, traffic and busy places. Our reflexes are not as fast as a dog who sees a cat on the other side of the road and suddenly makes a beeline for it into oncoming traffic.
6. If your dog takes off suddenly and the handle is pulled out of your hand, your dog can be terrified by the sound of the handle being dragged behind them along the ground.
We really can’t ever think of a situation where we would use or recommend a retractable leash. While there may be some situations where it could be appropriate – perhaps with an already well trained dog in an open space with no distractions or dangers, they are not as appropriate as learning to use a standard long lead safely.
